Standing, silk screen printing technique on fabric from burqa, 5’ x 10’
The burqa also known as ‘chadaree’ is a full-body and full-face covering with a mesh eyepiece, the wearing of which is enforced on women by the influence and intimidation of the political group of the Taliban in Afghanistan.
For this work I dismantled the burqa by taking off the headpiece which contained the mesh eyepiece and creating vertical divisions within the skirt of the garment. These vertical sections were then processed through a large-scale silk screen. The print is from a photograph I took in Mazar-i-Sharif Afghanistan referencing a place of worship and peace.
